What is Illuminated Brass?

Illuminators of the renaissance used gold and silver to enhance illustrated bibles and religious texts, an art style called illumination. Today I use metal, primarily brass, as a “canvas” using the metal to accent scenes painted in oil and acrylic. The metal surface gives my work an animating effect. I call this technique illuminated brass in homage to the master artists of the past.

Painting on metal or with metal embellishments is certainly not a new idea. My cousin, and fellow artist, Amanda Clark introduced me to the early method of using brass. I’ve since modified her initial technique and continue experimenting with new metals and methods. When I began painting on metal I would paint my scene and then use grinders to reveal the brass surface beneath. I still use this strategy, particularly for highlights and touch-ups, but now I usually begin by shaping the brass. My grinder now serves as a paint brush for the metal, etching in the shape of the waves and light.

Whatever the method, I like to imagine I’m illuminating the beauty of God’s creations like the artists of old in my own style.
